How to Kickstart Your Metabolism

You’ve heard it a million times before.

“Ramp up your metabolism to lose weight!”

That’s great, but how and why does this happen? No one seems to be clear on what exactly you need to do when looking to kickstart your metabolism for fat loss. So, I’m going to go into what the metabolism is and what you need to do to make this happen.

Let’s get into it!

What is a Metabolism?

The metabolism is essentially your body’s engine or furnace. It burns fuel, and then uses that fuel to help you move about and stay alive. Your body is constantly breaking molecules down to create fuel that propels all sorts of bodily functions. The main way in which this happens is typically through breaking down food you’ve consumed into ATP. This is then split to create ADP, which releases energy. This energy is what helps you lift that weight, run that mile, or get off the couch.

However, can this process be increased? Can you effectively boost the metabolism in a way that allows you to burn more body fat like a well-oiled machine? Yes, you can, and here’s how.

How to Kickstart Your Metabolism

As stated earlier, breaking down food for energy is the metabolism doing its job. This only happens at a rate that is equivalent to your actually physical activity. If you’re less active, you aren’t burning as much fuel. If you’re more active, then you burn more fuel. It comes down to the requirements and demands that are being put on the body in that moment and over time. So, if you’re looking to kickstart that metabolism, this is a great place to start.

Some of the leanest and most in shape people aren’t the ones hitting the gym 3 times a week. They’re the ones who hit the gym 3 times a week and live an active lifestyle. They go on walks, do chores, get out in nature, and just move. It doesn’t always have to be a workout in itself, but more so just an increase in actual activity. The more you move, the more energy you need, the more your metabolism works. This has a direct link to your decreases in weight and body fat!

Meal Frequency

If you watch someone add wood to a fire, it isn’t a one and done thing. They periodically come back with a little bit more and add to it. This keeps the flame burning nice and steady. Your metabolism works in a similar way. You need to be adding fuel to that fire, which keeps the body working on breaking it down. The more it has, the more it’s working. Digestion is something that actually burns calories in itself. So, if you’re adding good clean fuel to the fire, it’s going to boost the metabolism just breaking down food.

This is why it’s important to frequently eat high protein foods throughout the day that create a more thermic effect in the body. This is a great way dietarily for you to boost the rate at which your metabolism works!

Muscle Mass

You’ve probably watched someone with a ton of muscle mass eat. It’s like they eat for three people. Yet, you wonder how they keep that lean look all the time. I reality, the more muscle mass that you put on, the more calories you burn. Muscle is super thermogenic and leads to a higher metabolism. Thus, those individuals are eating more just to maintain what they have!

A great way for you to boost that metabolism is to focus on building some solid muscle mass. This may seem counterproductive at times because you could go up in weight, but your body fat will go down. This is what creates that lean look in the first place!

To conclude, the metabolism is like your internal furnace. You have to feed it fuel for it to work at a high rate. You also have to improve the machine that it’s working for. A solid, fast machine is going to burn better fuel at a better rate. This same concept goes for your body and its metabolism.

Focus on moving more, eating more frequent (high protein and veggies), and building muscle mass. All three of these will go a long way in boosting your metabolism through the roof!
